The other day I was feeling tired and sluggish after work…I was not aware of how obvious that was until my roommate and his girlfriend, with concerned looks on their faces, asked me if I was ok. Of course I responded with, “Yea, I am fine! Do I look tired?” As I quickly perked up and began to fake my okayness. As bad and as tired as I felt at that moment I knew I needed to get some exercise. To be honest I think I was as tired because I had not exercised in a few days. If you know me that is not normal and my body obviously had no clue what was going on. Working my full time job, trying to start a side business, and trying to grow Againstiflow have consumed my life! But I love every bit of it and I am really excited about the direction all of these are heading.

So here I am after work…tired, but in serious need of exercise. How was I going to make myself go for a run? As any person would I turned to YouTube. I remembered one day coming across a video that just absolutely fired me up! I searched the word “Fear” in YouTube and there it was: (if you are receiving this via email you cannot see the video…go to the website)

I mean if that doesn’t get you fired up I don’t know what will. As the nearly 9 minute video played out I felt more and more like I was ready to hit the pavement for a nice run. This tactic worked and I ran 3 miles that evening. After my run I ate dinner and then met with some againstiflow guys to discuss the future of this thing. I was not tired and I now had more energy than I had all day…except maybe right after my first cup of coffee earlier that morning.

Now so far this has been a good story…and I hope you enjoyed the video, but what does it have to do with anything?

Our last Instagram photo had a quote that said, “My greatest fear is not that I am inadequate. My greatest fear is that I am powerful beyond measure because my God is powerful beyond measure.” I actually got that quote from the above video, but I added “because my God is powerful beyond measure.” Why did I add that? I added that because I would be nothing without my God. He brought me from darkness to light and continues to lead me forward in life. When I came home exhausted I still knew that I needed to exercise…I knew it would be good for me at that moment. Although, it would have been much easier to lay on the couch and take a nap. In our pursuit of what the Lord is calling us to do in life sometimes the easier thing to do would be to stay right where we are. That is because sometimes God asks us to do things that are hard…uncomfortable…and challenging. The wise thing to do would be to follow God where he is calling us to go. The evil one will do everything in his power to turn us the other way. After I ran 3 miles I had more energy and felt more alive than I had all day. If we follow what God is calling us to do…even though it might be scary and seem impossible…we will feel more alive than we ever have in our life.

The only thing I fear in life is me being scared to put my full trust in God. I fear that His plan for me is so great that if I don’t follow Him and trust Him completely that I will miss out on something that is “powerful beyond measure.”

We have already seen life change and seen God’s work within Againstiflow. A quote from one Againstiflow member pretty much sums it up, “If Againstiflow were to fall to shambles today then that is fine because God has already used it to do its part.”

Joshua 1:9 says, “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”

My Greatest Fear1It is that time of year! Summer is winding down and schools are working to prepare for classes and students are preparing to move back to their schools. Before you get back in the school environment here are 4 questions that will help you prepare for the year!

How will I provide my peers and strangers with a consistent message about the person that I want to be and I believe God is calling me to be?

People have more respect for people that provide them with a consistent message through their actions. Follow through with what you promise people. Your actions speak louder than your words! Be confident in who you are and don’t change who you are just to try and “fit in”.

What can I do to make this the best year yet?

Be creative! At Presbyterian College, they have a big brother/big sister type of program that you can participate in with the local children’s home. Once a week you could go and pick up your little bro or little sis and do life together. I always wanted to do this, but I always ended up talking myself out of it because I didn’t think I had time between studying and soccer. Find somewhere close to campus where you can volunteer and do your best to fit it in your schedule. One hour a week!

What is a realistic GPA goal for the semester?

The reason you go to school is to get your education. So, get the most you can out of it! Take a hard look at your upcoming schedule and create a plan. You know your study habits and all of your potential from years and years of school. Be realistic, but remember that failing to plan is planning to fail! If you came in to college with bad study habits it is not too late to improve!

How can I maximize my fun for this semester?

High School and college present you with the most free time that you will ever have in your life. How you spend your time is important. During these times you will make lifelong friends and lifelong memories. It is not all about getting good grades. Balance between school and fun is key. It helps you keep life in perspective. So, live a little…for the right things of course!

Photo Aug 06, 4 16 41 PMWhen we started Againstiflow it was just an idea, but we knew there was more to it. God lit a fire deep down in our hearts before we even said the word “Againstiflow” and it was obvious He wanted us to use our past experiences to bring people closer to Him. Why did God give us this desire? Why did He want us, of all people, to reach out to students and show them His love? There are tons of organizations that already do that! Well, I have no idea. I do know that being a Christian and acting on what God wants you to do is hard. Especially in today’s world…it is harder than ever. I am young and I would love to hear the opinion of an older person, but in my life I have never seen so many people running towards Jesus. BUT I have also never seen so many people running in the complete opposite direction! Just like the middle class is getting smaller in the economy I see the middle class getting smaller in Christianity. The lukewarm Christians, the ones of the fence, are for some reason put in a position to choose one way or the other. That is basically what happened to us…God kicked us in the face and woke us up from our state of sleep walking through life. The fire continues to burn stronger than ever and I think that is God giving us the strength to go out and pursue…because without the fire we wouldn’t be moving. God can use ANYONE and I mean anyone to shine a light on this world. Look at the 12 Disciples; look at the story of Joseph. When you go through life you wonder how God is going to use what you are going through for the greater good. The story of Joseph in the Bible always reminds me of this and my mom always reminds me of that story when I complain about something (Love you mom). If you are in a tough situation right now go read the story of Joseph (Genesis 37-50) and be prepared for God to ask you to do something that you might not feel like you are capable of doing.

We are really excited for whatever God has planned next for Againstiflow and we want anyone and everyone who wants to be involved to reach out to us. There are numerous ways you can support us with your time and your prayers.

An AgainstiMentor is someone who feels called to use their experiences in life to teach and guide our future leaders. We need individuals who are out of college and who would be interested in mentoring a college student who is in a similar situation as you when you were their age. If you want to get on our “Mentor List” contact us and when we find a good match your AgainstiMentoring will begin!

This is a group of men in the business world who have a passion for their trade and a passion for entrepreneurship. When great minds get together the possibilities of what can happen are endless. The main goal of this program is to prepare college students for the future “real world” and to have a good time doing it. Business projects, start-ups, internships, networking, and more. We meet the 3rd Wednesday of every month at 6:30am at Tommy’s Ham House in Greenville, SC.

We partner with non-profit organizations that spend all of their time and energy reaching out to foreign parts of the world and being the hands and feet of Christ. If you want to experience other parts of the world and if you want to serve the people of the world there is not a better group to do it with. First trip is this December to the Dominican Republic ($1400). Details here!

These groups are for college students. We will go through various studies and dig into The Word while tackling all the challenging questions we face today. We will take awesome trips, serve the local community, and enjoy the beautiful world God has created for us. We are very excited about the possibilities within these AgainstiGroups. “Creating Community Against the Flow”

These will be random, spontaneous times when we decide we want to do something awesome…like have a huge bonfire or take a group of students to Frankie’s Fun Park…sign up for the newsletter if you want in on this fun or follow us on Facebook.

The best way you can support us is through diligent prayer. Pray for the fire in our hearts to stay blazing and pray for the youth of today…that they may rise up and become future leaders in a world that needs them more than ever!

I was just reminded of this…the night God got us together and put this on our hearts we were all sitting around a fire.

I think sometimes in my faith I feel like Peter from the movie “Forgetting Sarah Marshall” when Kunu is trying to teach him how to surf….

Don’t overthink things. It is not for you to figure out. If you are relentlessly pursuing God in all you do then you will know where He is leading you. If you are not then His footsteps will be harder to follow and you will be left trying to figure out what is going on.

The confusing part of the above paragraph can lie in the part about “pursuing God in all you do.” That is very hard and sometimes we don’t know if we should do this, do that, or are we trying to do too much? Sometimes we get the idea that God is going to magically put some beautiful, perfect, awesome person in our life (single people). He will…but not if you just lay there and do nothing. “You gotta do more than that…you’re just laying there. It looks like you’re boogie boarding.” Quit looking like you’re boogie boarding. God “will be your instincts.” Now “pop up” and go and follow those instincts! In this case the word follow does not mean to watch what someone is tweeting…it means to take action and physically move toward what God has put on your heart. We aren’t perfect and following those instincts will never look like you pictured it…but be “relentless” and never give up. Final thought – the more you get in His Word and pursue Him daily the clearer those “instincts” will be.

“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” (Joshua 1:9)
