Several months ago a few of us took a trip to Peru and took on the Santa Cruz Trek. We survived and we documented the entire trip the best we could! Enjoy!

Againstiflow Recap Of 2014

Posted: January 5, 2015 in Faith, Fun

A little recap of some things that went on in 2014. We are hoping and praying for big things in 2015! We are praying for the cities we live in and the lives of the people that walk the streets everyday in those cities.

Happy New Year! 2015 is going to be a good one!

My Greatest Fear1It is that time of year! Summer is winding down and schools are working to prepare for classes and students are preparing to move back to their schools. Before you get back in the school environment here are 4 questions that will help you prepare for the year!

How will I provide my peers and strangers with a consistent message about the person that I want to be and I believe God is calling me to be?

People have more respect for people that provide them with a consistent message through their actions. Follow through with what you promise people. Your actions speak louder than your words! Be confident in who you are and don’t change who you are just to try and “fit in”.

What can I do to make this the best year yet?

Be creative! At Presbyterian College, they have a big brother/big sister type of program that you can participate in with the local children’s home. Once a week you could go and pick up your little bro or little sis and do life together. I always wanted to do this, but I always ended up talking myself out of it because I didn’t think I had time between studying and soccer. Find somewhere close to campus where you can volunteer and do your best to fit it in your schedule. One hour a week!

What is a realistic GPA goal for the semester?

The reason you go to school is to get your education. So, get the most you can out of it! Take a hard look at your upcoming schedule and create a plan. You know your study habits and all of your potential from years and years of school. Be realistic, but remember that failing to plan is planning to fail! If you came in to college with bad study habits it is not too late to improve!

How can I maximize my fun for this semester?

High School and college present you with the most free time that you will ever have in your life. How you spend your time is important. During these times you will make lifelong friends and lifelong memories. It is not all about getting good grades. Balance between school and fun is key. It helps you keep life in perspective. So, live a little…for the right things of course!

Photo Aug 06, 4 16 41 PMWhen we started Againstiflow it was just an idea, but we knew there was more to it. God lit a fire deep down in our hearts before we even said the word “Againstiflow” and it was obvious He wanted us to use our past experiences to bring people closer to Him. Why did God give us this desire? Why did He want us, of all people, to reach out to students and show them His love? There are tons of organizations that already do that! Well, I have no idea. I do know that being a Christian and acting on what God wants you to do is hard. Especially in today’s world…it is harder than ever. I am young and I would love to hear the opinion of an older person, but in my life I have never seen so many people running towards Jesus. BUT I have also never seen so many people running in the complete opposite direction! Just like the middle class is getting smaller in the economy I see the middle class getting smaller in Christianity. The lukewarm Christians, the ones of the fence, are for some reason put in a position to choose one way or the other. That is basically what happened to us…God kicked us in the face and woke us up from our state of sleep walking through life. The fire continues to burn stronger than ever and I think that is God giving us the strength to go out and pursue…because without the fire we wouldn’t be moving. God can use ANYONE and I mean anyone to shine a light on this world. Look at the 12 Disciples; look at the story of Joseph. When you go through life you wonder how God is going to use what you are going through for the greater good. The story of Joseph in the Bible always reminds me of this and my mom always reminds me of that story when I complain about something (Love you mom). If you are in a tough situation right now go read the story of Joseph (Genesis 37-50) and be prepared for God to ask you to do something that you might not feel like you are capable of doing.

We are really excited for whatever God has planned next for Againstiflow and we want anyone and everyone who wants to be involved to reach out to us. There are numerous ways you can support us with your time and your prayers.

An AgainstiMentor is someone who feels called to use their experiences in life to teach and guide our future leaders. We need individuals who are out of college and who would be interested in mentoring a college student who is in a similar situation as you when you were their age. If you want to get on our “Mentor List” contact us and when we find a good match your AgainstiMentoring will begin!

This is a group of men in the business world who have a passion for their trade and a passion for entrepreneurship. When great minds get together the possibilities of what can happen are endless. The main goal of this program is to prepare college students for the future “real world” and to have a good time doing it. Business projects, start-ups, internships, networking, and more. We meet the 3rd Wednesday of every month at 6:30am at Tommy’s Ham House in Greenville, SC.

We partner with non-profit organizations that spend all of their time and energy reaching out to foreign parts of the world and being the hands and feet of Christ. If you want to experience other parts of the world and if you want to serve the people of the world there is not a better group to do it with. First trip is this December to the Dominican Republic ($1400). Details here!

These groups are for college students. We will go through various studies and dig into The Word while tackling all the challenging questions we face today. We will take awesome trips, serve the local community, and enjoy the beautiful world God has created for us. We are very excited about the possibilities within these AgainstiGroups. “Creating Community Against the Flow”

These will be random, spontaneous times when we decide we want to do something awesome…like have a huge bonfire or take a group of students to Frankie’s Fun Park…sign up for the newsletter if you want in on this fun or follow us on Facebook.

The best way you can support us is through diligent prayer. Pray for the fire in our hearts to stay blazing and pray for the youth of today…that they may rise up and become future leaders in a world that needs them more than ever!

I was just reminded of this…the night God got us together and put this on our hearts we were all sitting around a fire.

ImageLast night I was feeling good and I had a lot of energy so I got in a workout from about 10 to 10:30 PM. I have always been a “night owl” and I usually get a lot of work done at night. I feel like that is also when I do my best thinking. We started discussing whether it is better to exercise/work late at night or get up and do this early in the morning. Here are a few things to think about.

Happy Hormones

During an exercise or a workout your body releases several hormones. These hormones (serotonin and endorphins) are responsible for giving you that good, happy feeling you have after and during a workout. That along with the adrenaline rush will get your day off to a great start. So as far as exercise goes you should replace your morning coffee with 20-30 minutes of exercise. If you exercise late at night you will not sleep as well and you will have a tough time waking up in the morning. This brings us to our next topic…

Morning People

I can speak to this right now as I am writing this blog. I worked out late last night and this morning has not been pleasant. With that being said…people who go to bed early and wake up early are much more optimistic and have a brighter outlook on the day ahead. They feel like they have been productive before they even get to work or go to class.

Quiet Time

My night owl ways are slowly coming to an end and I can see the morning owl taking me over. Most of the time when I get a moment to myself it is late at night. If I choose to read or write in my journal it takes about 10 minutes and then my eyes begin to weigh 100 lbs. Whether you are planning out your day, your week, setting goals, or spending time with God it is better to do these things in the morning. This way they are fresh on your mind throughout the entire day. The night owl does these things and then wakes up to only have forgotten half of what he read or wrote. The morning owl has the whole day to process these thoughts and also gets a feeling of accomplishment before the day has even begun.

If you are a night owl, like me, I challenge you to try to change your ways. It is not an easy process and I guarantee that you will not want to get out of bed those first few weeks. I was once told it takes 3 months to create a habit and 6 months to break a habit. So…although you might fail at getting up a few mornings do not let that discourage you from winning the war. I am in this with you and if I can do it then I know you can do it. Plus, nothing good happens late at night….

Successful people are morning owls. Live against the flow and let’s be successful.

Note:  I just realized I did not put on a belt to go to work. If I was a morning owl that would never have happened. I guess my jacket is staying on all day.

1. Pay for the car behind you in the drive-thru line
Change the world one good deed at a time! It is such a small thing to do and it can make someone’s day. This free meal could be just the encouragement they needed.

2. Go visit your grandparents
Take an hour out of your busy schedule over the next 12 days and go pop in at your Grandparents. It would mean the world to them and I know I do not spend enough time with my own. Get them to tell you a story about the good old days!

3. Invite someone to church
The reason for the season! Even the CEOs (Christmas and Easter Only) are out this time of year. So step up and ask a classmate, coworker, or friend that might not normally attend church to tag along with you.

4. Take your dog on a walk
If you do not have a dog then maybe your Grandparents do. You could knock out 2 birds with 1 stone! (See #2)

5. Ask someone how you can pray for them
The power of prayer is underestimated and under used. A simple way to show someone that you care for them and that God loves them.

6. Say something nice and fun to a stranger to brighten their day
Hold the door for them, smile, and say something nice. Maybe a compliment or just a “Have a nice day!” Get creative. It is the small things in life that matter most.

7. Let that car merge in front of you that you normally wouldn’t
You Jimmy Johnson type drivers know what I am talking about! That car flies up beside you and then proceeds to put on its blinker to get in your lane…I know it can be frustrating because I am the guy who never lets them in. Take a deep breath and just let it happen – it’s not a big deal in the grand scheme of things.

8. Leave someone a note
This can be your roommate, coworker, girlfriend, brother, or the person you walk past everyday and nod your head at. You already know who it should be so make it happen!

9. Buy a homeless person some food
Most of you know where the homeless people in your city hang out. It is a tough time of year for them and I am sure they would be very appreciative of a hot meal. Give them a few words of encouragement while you are at it.

10. Leave a larger than normal tip for your waiter or waitress
It is the small things that matter.

11. Clean your room
Whether you live in a dorm, at home with your parents, or on your own this is a good thing to do. You should probably make it a habit. I am sure GoodGuySwag would agree.

12. Againstiflow
This one is on you. Get creative and do something that you do not normally do. Get out of your comfort zone. I would give you some ideas, but I don’t want to limit your creativeness.
